1.Introduction

This statement sets out A&J Electrical Services Ltd (AJE) policy in respect of any employee or contractor whose proper performance of their duties is or maybe impaired as a result of drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs.

All staff and persons concerned are to be made aware of this statement and become familiar with its contents.

2.  Policy

The Contracts Manager of AJE will take all reasonable steps to ensure that all employees and contractors are made aware of this statement. Disciplinary action will be taken against any employee or contractor if he or she is found in a workplace under the control of AJE, or attempting to drive a vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, as a result of which they have the incapacity for work or to drive a vehicle.

It is a requirement of AJE that no employee or contractor shall:-

• Report or endeavour to report for duty knowing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  
  
• Report for duty in an unfit state due to the use of alcohol or drugs.
  
  
• Be in possession of illegal drugs on a site under the control AJE, in a AJE vehicle, or during working hours.
  
  

  Contract Managers and Supervisors will be continually on alert to react to staff or contractors in situations where:-

• There is reasonable belief of excessive alcohol consumption or use of illegal substances immediately before or during working hours.
  
  
• There are grounds to suspect that the action of a member of staff or contractor, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, leads to a safety critical incident involving that person or others.
  
  
• Abnormalities of behaviour require the intervention of the supervisor and it is evident that the probable cause is attributed to the use of alcohol or drugs.

AJE will not tolerate any departures from the above rules that will if contravened, be a gross misconduct leading to dismissal.   

3.Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed at regular intervals. It will be amended and updated as conditions dictate.
